Several English words end with an “s” in their singular form. Most of these don’t pose any problem; few people would say “the kiss were beautiful” instead of “the kiss was beautiful”. However, there are a few that commonly cause problems:
Although the equivalent expression in many languages would be in the plural, “news” is a singular noun, so you should say:
correct The news is being broadcast by all major TV stations.
wrong The news are being broadcast by all major TV stations.
Oddly enough, “news” is uncountable, which means that not only is it followed by a singular verb, but you also cannot say “a news”:
correct I’ve got good news.
wrong I’ve got a good news.
Lens
Unlike “news”, “lens” is countable, so you can try to remember that if there can be “two lenses”, there must also be “one lens”:
correct His new lens is big.
wrong His new lens are big.
Series
To make things even more confusing, the plural of “series” is also series. You should therefore use a singular verb if you speak about one particular series, e.g. “my favourite TV series has been cancelled”, and a plural verb if you speak about several series at a time, e.g. “all the series of the Unknown Channel are good”.
Means
Similarly to “series”, “means” is already both the singular and the plural form. For example, “railway is a means [singular] of transportation, but there are also several other good means [plural] of transportation.
Bellows
A “bellows” is an instrument used for blowing air. Like “series”, the plural of “bellows” is also “bellows”, so you have to use a singular verb when speaking about one bellows and a plural verb when speaking about more than one.
Measles
Measles is a disease, and as you have probably noticed from the previous sentence, the word is in the singular:
correct Measles is especially common among children.
wrong Measles are especially common among children.
Quite naturally, it is uncountable, i.e. you cannot have “two measles”.
Plural nouns that learners think are singular
In addition to the words above, there are a few words which only have a plural form and might be confusing for some learners if the equivalent expression in their mother tongue is in the singular:
jeans, tights, trousers, pants
All this hosiery is used only in the plural (usually because they come in pairs—for both legs—and the singular form has died out):
correct Her new jeans / tights / trousers / pants are black.
wrong Her new jeans / tights / trousers / pants is black.
tongs
Not to be confused with “thongs”, the plural of “thong” which is a type of underwear, “tongs” are the same case as above:
correct The tongs are not big enough.
wrong The tongs is not big enough.

Here’s an interesting question: is the word news singular or plural? Should we say the news is good or the news are good?
Today I’ll answer this question as well as help you avoid a common mistake that English learners often make with “news.” And I also have a very special announcement, so make sure to watch to the end of the lesson to find out what that is!
The word “news” in English is considered singular and uncountable. So we use the singular forms of verbs, like is and was: the news is on channel 5, the news was surprising. Don’t use are or were.
But a more common mistake is saying “a news.” With uncountable nouns, we never use a or an. So don’t say, “I heard a good news” – this might be possible in your native language, but in English you should say “I heard some good news.”
So if the word news is singular and uncountable, how can we talk about more than one piece of news? Well, that’s one possibility – use the word “piece” or “bit” – for example, “I have three pieces/bits of bad news for you” if you want to talk about three distinct topics.
We could also talk about “items of news” or sometimes “news stories” – the term news stories is often used when referring to news you see on TV or read articles about.
Finally, never say “many news” – the word “many” can only be used with countable nouns. Instead, you can use “much” or “a lot of / lots of” – for example, “there wasn’t much news over the weekend” or “I have lots of news to tell you!”
Got it? News is singular, and uncountable – so make sure to say “some news” and never “a news.”

Hi there! What if I want to say:
The good news is you don´t have to pay for it!
The good news are you don´t have to pay for it and you can get as much as you want!
Is the second right? That´s how I would have written it!
